Preservation and Adaptive Reuse

Poster Frost Mirto is a leading architectural conservation and historic preservation firm specializing in the restoration of vernacular Sonoran Desert structures as well as the assessment, rehabilitation, and adaptive reuse of all types of historic buildings.  We work most frequently within the historic districts and neighborhoods surrounding downtown Tucson but have also worked on rural historic sites, cultural landscapes, and ranch properties in Southern Arizona.  

In 2003, Poster Frost was a the winner of the prestigious National Trust for Historic Preservation Honor Award for the restoration of the 1910 Stone Avenue Temple as a community center and Jewish cultural museum.  In 2003, we were recognized with the Governors Award for Preservation for our work on the restoration and adaptive re-use of the Historic Train Depot in Tucson.

2003.  Union Pacific Railroad Depot, Tucson, AZ.  City of Tucson.  Restoration and rehabilitation of 21,000 complex of four historic structures and urban design of five acre urban historic site.

2008.  Fort Lowell – Master Plan and Restoration Plan, Tucson, AZ.  City of Tucson.  Interdisciplinary master plan for 50 acre recreational park, with emphasis on restoration planning for historic structures and cultural landscapes.

2007-2008.  Tucson High Magnet School – PE Facilities Improvements, Tucson, AZ.  Tucson Unified School District.  Feasibility study, master plan, and design and construction services for rehabilitation to historic 1938 Roy Place Gymnasium, new practice gym, and new parking structure.

2007-2008.  Steam Pump Ranch – Master Plan, Oro Valley, AZ.  Town of Oro Valley.  Interdisciplinary master plan for 5 acre historic conservation park, with emphasis on planning for historic structures, cultural landscapes, and economic development.

2008.  Shoemaker Ranch – Assessment, Tucson, AZ.  Pima County.  Building condition assessments of historic ranch buildings for submission to SHPO.

2008.  Fourth Avenue Historic Inventory, Tucson, AZ.  City of Tucson.  Historic inventory forms and analysis of retail properties on 4th Avenue along the proposed rout of the modern street car project.

2007-2008.  63 east Congress / McClelland Building, Tucson, AZ.  John Wesley Miller Companies.  Alternative development concepts for historic downtown mercantile building and storefront, and including tenant improvement plans for On-A-Roll Sushi restaurant.

2007.  Steinfield and Citizens Warehouses - Assessment, Tucson, AZ.  City of Tucson.  Condition assessment and restoration and structural stabilization feasibility study as part of the planning effort for the Downtown LINKS roadway project.

2007.  U.S. Coastal & Geodetic Survey's Tucson Magnetic Observatory, Tucson, AZ.  City of Tucson.  Assessment of historic early 1900’s structures at the City’s Udall Park.

2007-2008.  450 North Myer Avenue / Rosenquist Adobes, Tucson, AZ.  Rosenquist family.  Adaptive reuse and preservation of two historic adobe residential structures in El Presidio neighborhood.

2007.  317 North Court Avenue, Tucson, AZ.  Preservation of historic adobe and lime plaster structure in El Presidio neighborhood.

2004-2008.  Canoa Ranch / Raul M. Grijalva Conservation Park, Santa Cruz Valley, AZ.  Pima County.  Interdisciplinary master plan for 5,000 acre regional conservation park, with emphasis on restoration planning for historic cultural resources, economic sustainability, and interpretation.  Assessment, design, and construction for preservation and restoration of historic vernacular adobe structures and site walls.

2003-2004.  Tucson Historic Warehouse Arts District Master Plan, Tucson, AZ.  Tucson Arts District Partnership.  Community planning effort to develop the TWAD as a center for incubation, production, and exhibition of the arts, foster management of the district, make needed improvements, and protect the artists in the face of rapid change.

2006-2008.  Santa Cruz County Courthouse, Nogales Arizona.  City of Nogales.  Ongoing preservation and rehabilitation projects to landmark historic structure.

2007-2008.  Alamo Hotel / Apartments, Tucson, AZ.  Primavera Foundation.  Phased rehabilitation to historic hotel in Armory Park neighborhood.

2005.  Old Vail Post Office, Vail, AZ.  Pima County.  Building condition assessment of historic adobe structure in rural Pima County

2005.  Desert Sanatorium / Tucson Medical Center, Tucson, AZ.  Tucson Medical Center.  Building condition and historic assessment of seven early 1920’s structures as part of TMCs comprehensive master planning process to study the feasibility of campus expansion.

2005.  Teresa Lee Clinic, Tucson, AZ.  City of Tucson.  Building Condition Assessment of historic era structure.

2000-2008.  408 South 6th Avenue / All Saints Catholic Church, Tucson AZ.  City of Tucson.   Building Condition Assessment, Feasibility Study, and design and construction services for structural improvements to historic church in downtown Tucson that is known now as the Tucson Performing Arts Center and is the home of the Arizona Theater Company.

2005.  44-60 North Stone / Walgreen’s Building, Tucson, AZ.  Pima County.  Historic Preservation Feasibility Study to restore historic 1929 Roy Place façade.

2005.  Fort Huachuca Assessments, Sierra Vista, AZ.  Historic assessments and Historic Property Inventory Forms for eight structures on historic US Army fort.

1997-2008.  Dunbar Project / 300 West 2nd Street, Tucson, AZ.  Ongoing phased rehabilitation and restoration project to convert historic, segregated public school campus to neighborhood center and African American Cultural Museum.
