TUCSON HIGH MAGNET SCHOOL – HALL OF CHAMPIONS

FOR TUCSON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT NO.1

Poster Mirto McDonald was the lead architectural firm for athletic facilities improvements at Tucson High Magnet School that included a major rehabilitation to the 71,000 square foot historic main gymnasium (1939, Roy Place Architect) and construction of a new 29,000 square foot practice gym situated 40’-0” east of the original. The Hall of Champions serves as a central lobby and connection between the historic gym and new practice gym while commemorating the rich history of Tucson High Badger Athletics. This pavilion-like structure was designed to stand between the two gymnasiums, connecting only with linear glass skylights and a glass curtain wall. This treatment allows the east facade of the 1939 gym to stand free of the new construction to protect its historic integrity.

“The firm of Poster, Frost and Mirto (currently known as Poster Mirto McDonald) presented a winning combination… Not only were all the goals of the Bond Program for THMS addressed, they were completed at the highest level and provided TUSD a finished product that exceeded all expectations” - Marcus E. Jones, R.A., TUSD Bonds and Architecture
